Slap Chop: Martial Art or Painting Technique?

There's a new(ish) painting technique in town and it's called Slap Chop. But is it new? Is it controversial and is it as innovative as its supporters claim? More importantly, does it have any value as a painting technique for the small-scale historical wargamer?

  1. There is nothing new in the hobby anymore.

    1. Contrast/Express/speed paints have been the biggest change in recent years. Sometimes its just useful to revisit old ideas and see how they work with modern products.

  2. Yes it’s all become pretty stilted and unimaginative now, Simon

    1. I don't know about that. There are new products and rules coming out all the time. Who knows what may be just around the corner.

  3. I am sorry but I agree with the original two comments. I buy very little now and am just completing a few old projects. Nothing has really interested me in the hobby for a while. With the economy as it is, I think some games companies will now go under. Grim, I know, but that’s the reality.

  4. Sorry a late comment, I am not reading blogs as avidly as I used to. I guess that is a sign of my malaise in hobby interest at the moment as well. I know things move on but I really dislike the way wargaming as a hobby seems to be heading. I dislike plastic and resin figures and can never see me purchasing a 3D printer. They seem to be such a phaff, that sucks the joy out of anything that’s printed. Also the prints seem dismally easy to damage in some cases. I am also not sure how long the printed items will actually last before becoming brittle (like plastic/resin) or turning to dust. I do
not want to read large complicated rule books with pages of pointless photographs. I do not want to buy into the latest fad game, He Man and the Masters of the Universe, really?!*%??? I do not want to buy whatever fad and badly tested product the appalling Warlord games are peddling at the moment for example. I could go on, forgive me for my rant, a different Simon.

  5. Yep the hobby is slowly going under. Who in gods name wants to subscribe to the latest starter box of overpriced plastic cr*p? Totally agree with the above comments unfortunately. Contrast/Express paints are in my opinion terrible things as an example of latest hobby fashion rubbish. Give it a couple of years and they will disappear if not sooner. GW another example of overpriced tat. Wargames magazines are a waste of money now, same old, same old…

  6. I cannot see anyone spending much money on gaming now
Hence traders and manufacturers will go bust quickly
There will be fewer releases of new products
    The hobby will contract
Clubs are already struggling to keep and attract new members

  7. I am a bit late to the party here. Am unable to find much inspiration in the hobby at the moment. Only been to two shows this year, neither impressed me at all. Not with gaming items on sale or demo games. I long for the ‘old’ days. Maybe I am looking through rose tinted glasses.
