Turn Epic Blunders into Epic Wargames

Want to make your miniature wargaming battles even more exciting and authentic? In "How to Turn Epic Blunders into Epic Games," I dive into how history’s greatest military mistakes — like the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, Isandlwana, and Stalingrad — can inspire better historical wargaming scenarios. I suggest ways to design wargame scenarios that create realistic battlefield chaos, from fog of war to miscommunication, poor logistics, and overconfidence, without feeling forced or unfair.

  1. I've always thought that the Battle of Midway is a tough one to wargame properly.

  2. Good discussion, Lee. I love your suggestion of a Stalingrad game where the German player scores points each week or month for holding areas of the city, which may be enough to keep him holding on for a few more points, even when the final collapse seems inevitable. Could he "win" by holding more of the city for longer than his historical counterpart (Gen. Paulus?) before still being anihilated?
I wonder what kind of points system could work in the other examples. Could Varus score points for showing how much he trusts his German ally Arminius by not sending out scouts? Could he score something for getting his 3 legions all the way to their destination, even if they are then ambushed?
