Great post Lee. There are a lot of depends in this. The period in play - ancients and medieval battles are seldom about holding or taking terrain but destroying the opposing army and/or taking hostages. Whereas as we draw closer to the 20th century, terrain becomes more significant as a victory condition I don't like fighting to the last man.
There is a lot say on this, but much boils down to "it depends" on period, scale of engagement, is it part of a campaign, the type of engagement, etc.
A game without some result (draw, win, lose and more) or victory conditions may, some argue, not even be a game.
