Knowing the rules well helps, but understanding what might have happened historically, when a situation falls between the rules, that's the skill of a good umpire. It is not just about how well an individual knows the rules. We know that situations arise which are not covered by the rules. That is why the individual who umpires should also have the best knowledge of the period being represented.Andrew Prockterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12395698010121447138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-85337565019765317712020-10-06T17:09:59.452+01:002020-10-06T17:09:59.452+01:00I love the term 'Plumpires'. But once you have much more than six you need to decide who is going to decide disputes and be a de facto umpire. Equally is you have a real need for an umpire (ambushes, hidden movement etc) then an umpire is needed to avoid potential "huffs"Scott Duncannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-39005234199268509342020-10-04T13:44:54.014+01:002020-10-04T13:44:54.014+01:00I think it largely depends upon the rules used. If you tried to do this with say Black Powder II, you would most certainly need an umpire.Steve J.https://www.blogger.com/profile/12143308117853983963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-32230358362813027472020-10-04T12:21:24.780+01:002020-10-04T12:21:24.780+01:00You don't usually "need" an umpire ...You don't usually "need" an umpire for most wargames.
