Are historical wargamers a fantasy

A few weeks ago I was asked "Are historical wargamers a fantasy?" I gave a brief answer in the comments be decided to try to expand my answer for today's video.

  1. Cheers BL,
Long time watcher, first time commenter.
I found the title confusing. Is it wargamers or wargames? Taken one way, I consider myself a historical wargamer (even though I don't use miniatures in the traditional sense). I do not consider myself a fantasy.
Grammar and semantics aside, I thought it was an interesting topic.
Along with other projects, I am trying to wind up a Spartans vs Vikings project. So, while the opposing forces are historical, having them meet in actual battle on a tabletop is the very definition of fantasy.
Interesting comments about labels and categories and how we often tend to deny, eschew, or even crave the identities afforded to us by labels and categories.
    Cheers & good gaming,
    Chris

  2. Historical wargamers are no fantasy, Lee! The annual Great Wargaming Survey sent out by Wargames, Soldiers, and Strategy magazine explores this very question by asking survey respondents where they lay on the Historical vs Fantasy/Sci-Fi spectrum. There are many respondents classifying themselves as PURELY Historical wargamers and many classifying themselves as PURELY Fantasy/Sci-Fi wargamers. Of course, many fall somewhere in between these two extremes.
