Wargaming Periods
I wanted a list of wargaming periods and realised I couldn't find one anwhere on the web. So here I have compiled a list from various sources and present them in Chronological order. Some categories have sub categories listed below them and where periods overlap I have listed both. This is by no means a comprehensive list and will grow with time.
Ancients - Anything before 450AD
Dark Ages - 450-1066AD
Medieval - 1067-1500 AD (More Accurately 1067-1485)
Pike & Shot - Straddles several 'periods' from 1400-1721 from the introduction of early firearms to the abandonment of the pike
WotR - Wars of the Roses between 1455 and 1485
Renaissance - 1500–1700
Post Medieval - 1500-1900 AD but more accurately 1486-1899
TYW - Thirty Years War from 1618–1648
ECW - English Civil War 1641–1651
18C - 18th Century
SYW - Seven Years War 1756-1763
AWI - American War of Independence 1775–1783
Napoleonic - The Napoleonic Wars 1789-1815 - French Revolution to exile of Napoleon
19C - Covers a host of 19th Century wars, post-Napoleon
ACW - American Civil War 1861–1865
Colonial - 19th Century Africa
Western - 19th century 'Wild West' inspired games
Crimea - Crimea 1853-1856
WWI - World War One 1914-1918
Inter-War - Between 1918 and 1939
WWII - World War Two 1939-1945
Modern - Post WWII
Korea - 1950-53 - Opening moves of the Cold War
Nam - The Vietnam War from 1955 to 1975 (US Involvement from 1961-1973)
FGW - First Gulf War 2003
Fantasy - Any fictional setting but generally 'Tolkienist' in style
Pulp - Semi historical settings of 1920's,30's,40's but with a fantasy element based on contemporary Pulp Fiction
SciFi - Science Fiction
Steam Punk - Victorian Sci Fi particularly inspired by the stories of HG Wells & Jules Vern
Weird War Two - Historical but twisted. Nazi Zombies, the occult etc

Grognard - Originaly "a veteran soldier of Napoleon's Old Guard". Has become slang for someone who likes playing wargames.
