My high school gaming group broke up before we were even finished with school. One suggestion I have is trying more free form adventuring using a product like Mythic or Rory's story cubes coupled with John Fiore's 9Q's on solonexus to drive the story. That way the GM can even be a player because they have no foreknowledge of events. You can use 4e or whatever for all the stats and mechanics, so not much extra to learn. Hope you can some how save the group.Seanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15428727065347379281noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-76156239654672887782013-03-15T22:00:16.690+00:002013-03-15T22:00:16.690+00:00Very thought-provoking post, Lee. The thing is, times now are incredibly busy rightly or wrongly, and most of us just don't have the time to devote to sprawling campaign games in bespoke, gaming venues.
To that end, I solo game for the majority of the time and play PC/console online strategy games to sate my competition urges.
It is the painting and creativity of terrain building that I enjoy; but everyone to their own ;)Montyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06230149195753516430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-1585738818471772772013-03-15T21:34:51.416+00:002013-03-15T21:34:51.416+00:00See you tomorrow Lee. Being a player it was not as tough as being the DM/GM... players just turn up and play, but the GMs got a load of planning, reading, writing etc to do...
I tried doing it once just as a simple mini group, with wife and kids, but was astounded at the level of work I was having to do just set and play a game... and being a painter, I'd need to find time to paint up all the figures for it...
I quickly realized I simply didn't have the time...

The best way I have found to get the feel of RPG gaming, without the in depth set up and drama, are many of the campaign linked Skirmish games, like Legends of the High Seas, or Empire of the Dead.
Great fun, only a handful of figures needed, and a sense of development/continuity through the post game campaign sequence. Plus you don't all need to turn up on the same night to play. Also the handicap systems inherent in the campaign usually mean if someones 'team' gets a bit left behind, they can still play and catch up...
Its about as good as you can get, for us time poor gamers!

But like you, I'll still have those fond memories of when RPGing was great...

Best regards
Scott

Scottswargaminghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00581220877007982139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-76978120767993491772013-03-15T18:10:58.922+00:002013-03-15T18:10:58.922+00:00Maybe a change of night is what you need? Fridays ...Maybe a change of night is what you need? Fridays tends to clash with a lot of family/friend commitments: birthday party's, works' nights out etc. If you all have a fair distance to travel, then perhaps an afternoon gig is better? You actor friends will have a nightmare getting out of Friday evening shows, but matinee's are a lot easier to get time off for.

Failing that, rather than a campaign have you considered troupe style play? Everyone takes a turn Dming in the same campaign. Works especially well if you play episodic games - sort of the way an episode of Buffy or Battlestar Galactica worked. Not every character appeared in every episode. And if the adventures are designed to be short (say six or seven encounters per session) then you can complete the entire scenario in a single session.

If none of you have time to create adventures, then RPGA type adventures are perfect. They're designed to be finished in four hours or so. Perfect for an evening in.

Chat to you some more about it tomorrow, if you like?Lead Legionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12700198528204457272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-31423887809144010602013-03-15T17:44:41.408+00:002013-03-15T17:44:41.408+00:00A good thought provoking post.... Many of them are free midweek and they're happy to let them out at a nominal fee in return for your drink money across the bar.... Thought about joining up with other groups in the area to give you a bigger pool of possible players?Steve-the-Wargamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07077311120172727690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-78409046656563205692013-03-15T17:41:47.752+00:002013-03-15T17:41:47.752+00:00It sounds like a shame. I'm in a film club, and every time we lose a member we recruit someone new (like the Immortals, I suppose!).

Cheers, SimonBigRedBathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05622983082204451158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1298399641711237003.post-33704844366283886762013-03-15T17:11:33.477+00:002013-03-15T17:11:33.477+00:00Good luck with this Lee, it sucks when it does com...Good luck with this Lee, it sucks when it does come to an end but it is possible to keep it going, hopefully you will find a solution that works for the majority

IanIanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17113835961977211021noreply@blogger.com
